Provincial Bargaining Bulletin Sept. 5th

Message to the Members of OSSTF/FEESO:

The new school year is upon us, and for many of OSSTF/FEESO’s 60,000 plus Members, it means a return to work, while for others, it means a continuation of the support and services you always provide. Together you make up a valued workforce dedicated to supporting a robust public education system. We hope that no matter what your summer was filled with, you were able to find some time to enjoy the season and all it has to offer.

To stay up to date on the most important OSSTF/FEESO Member updates and upcoming events, please ensure you have access to the Members-only section of the provincial website.

Upcoming Town Halls and Member-Information Sessions on Bargaining Pathway

On August 25, OSSTF/FEESO local Presidents and Chief Negotiators voted overwhelmingly to recommend to Members a proposal that provides a pathway to resolve outstanding bargaining issues without a strike or lockout. This pathway can include the use of binding interest arbitration for any unresolved bargaining issues at the local and/or central tables and sets out a process to determine a remedy for Bill 124 for those employed by school boards across the province.

OSSTF/FEESO Members under the School Boards Collective Bargaining Act will participate in a province-wide vote on the proposal with the vote taking place online between September 8 and 27, 2023.

Visit the new Member Vote on Bargaining Pathway page on the OSSTF/FEESO website for specific information about the proposal and your opportunity to vote.

OSSTF/FEESO leadership is confident this is the best pathway to reaching a fair collective agreement for Members under the SBCBA. Provincial Office is hosting town halls and Member information meetings in Districts throughout the month of September to discuss this groundbreaking proposal and answer questions from the membership.

Participation in the town halls and/or Member information meetings is highly encouraged. Below are the dates and registration links for the town halls:

• Thursday, September 7 – 6:15 p.m. ET - https://cvent.me/blEygl

(offered with simultaneous French translation and ASL interpretation)

• Saturday, September 23 - 1:00 p.m. ET - https://cvent.me/1mn2mz

Registration is highly recommended for these meetings but not required.

Members are strongly encouraged to have their voices heard through the online vote. To be able to participate in the vote using our online voting centre, you must be able to access the Members Only section of the provincial website. Participation in either the town halls or Member information meetings is not required to be able to vote.

You can also find more information on this proposed pathway shared in Bargaining Bulletin #39, issued on Friday, August 25, attached to this email and on the Member Vote on Bargaining Pathway webpage.

Teachers and education workers continue to face mounting challenges, including ongoing attacks on the public education system by the Ford government. Cuts in the classroom often disproportionately impact racialized and equity-seeking members and students. At a time when staff and students in Ontario’s schools and universities are facing a rise in racism, discrimination, and hate, they deserve more investments in protection and support, not less.

As a unified force, OSSTF/FEESO and its Members will continue to fight for a strong, well-funded public education system. We remain united against the government’s ongoing shortchanging of schools and universities, and we are strengthened by our resolve to protect and enhance public education for all. We know that investing in publicly funded education and its workforce is the best way to foster strong communities and support the best outcomes for the students we serve.
